The Earl of Wessex

His Royal Highness THE PRINCE EDWARD ANTONY RICHARD LOUIS, Earl of Wessex and Viscount Severn, KG, GCVO, is 55 today.
  • Royal Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter
  • Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order
The Earl and Countess of Wessex have two children: James, styled Viscount Severn, and the Lady Louise Windsor.

Prince Edward shall eventually succeed to his father's titles and styles as His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich.

His Royal Highness, Royal Colonel, 2nd Battalion, The Rifles, in 2018 attended the Welcome Home Parade in Lisburn, County Antrim, and visited Thiepval Barracks, Magheralave Road, Lisburn, having been received by Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim (Mrs Joan Christie CVO OBE).

2 Rifles returned from a six-month tour of Iraq.

Prince Edward attended an Inspection and Salute in the city centre.

The Council said it was delighted with the royal visit, which is the first royal visit to the newly-created Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council.

In attendance were the Lord-Lieutenant for County Antrim, Mrs Joan Christie CVO OBE; His Worship the Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Timothy Morrow; the High Sheriff of County Antrim, Mrs Gillian Bingham; Major-General Rupert Jones CBE (Assistant Chief of the General Staff); Brigadier John Swift OBE (Commander, 38 (Irish) Brigade); Lieutenant-Colonel Neil Bellamy (Commanding Officer, 2nd Battalion, The Rifles); Lisburn & Castlereagh City Councillors, its Chief Executive, Dr Theresa Donaldson and members of the general public.

Can you explain how it is decided which titles the Princes Charles, Andrew and Edward receive. For example, why Edward and not Andrew becomes Duke of Edinburgh.

They are the Royal Family and they can do what they like! The Queen is at the top of the honours pyramid, and can dispense titles as she wishes. VC

Prince Andrew is already a royal duke as Duke of York. Inheriting his father's title as Duke of Edinburgh in due course will advance Prince Edward in the peerage to the same rank as his elder brother.
