How interesting. The Killyhevlin remains probably the county's most notable hotel. Thanks for bringing back memories of Castle ...Tim,

Thanks for bringing back memories of Castle Archdale and the Lakelands of Fermanagh in the 1960s and 70s. We holidayed there and like you we often ate in the local hotels, particularly the Manor House and the Killyhevlin.

I remember that the Manor House was the first place I saw an electronic arcade machine - that simple tennis one with the two white blocks and a ball on a black screen. Very basic compared to today's computer wizardry but to a child then it was the height of excitement.

From 1976 the Killyhevlin was owned by Archie and Pearl Watson who had previously owned the Drumsill Hotel in Armagh. Pearl was the sister of my father's best friend at QUB, and our families regularly holidayed together. As well as being among Northern Ireland's top hoteliers Archie and Pearl were well known among the horse racing fraternity having produced French Tan to finish runner-up to L'Escargot in the 1970 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Their son Rodney who took over the running of the hotel sadly passed away suddenly in 2014 but members of the Watson family still manage the hotel today.
Stroan Rangernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2705771450596300887.post-90832106854599498962022-02-24T21:43:20.024+00:002022-02-24T21:43:20.024+00:00I have a caravan at the Castle Archdale site and h...I have a caravan at the Castle Archdale site and have spent the majority of my childhood there.
