The CO of 3 Ir Gds, at Arnhem [ played by Michael Cain in the film *A Bridge Too Far* ] was Lt-Col 28,140 John Ormsby Evelyn [ *Joe* ] Vandelour DSO & Bar 1903-1988 who served 1924-1951 retiring a Brig. In Normandy 1944 where his 3 Ir Gds was in 32 Bde. He was born in Pakistan where his father Col Crofton Bury Vandelour DSO 1867-1947 was in the Army from which he retired in 1922. Crofton was a First Cousin of Life Gds Capt Alexander Moore Vandelour 1883-1914 Killed In Action in WW 1 on the Western Front whose brother had earlier been killed in the Boer War. They were related to Capt [ Rifle Bde ] Hector Stewart Vandelour 1836-1909 who succeeded to Kilrush House in 1881 but it was accidentally burnt on March 26, 1897.
