My great-gran...I am a Canning in the United States. My great-grandfather Edward Canning was born in Ballymena, County Antrim in 1838. I know that his mother, Margaret (Peggy) Elder, was born in Garvagh in 1804. I also know that his father (Peggy’s husband) was Robert Canning, who I assume was born in Garvagh sometime around then. Finally, I know that Robert Canning was out of the family picture by 1851 when Peggy took Edward and his two sisters to the States from Belfast by ship. I’ve always assumed that Robert died during the Irish potato famine but I may be wrong.<br /><br />Would be interested to know if your research uncovered a Robert Canning who would have been born in Garvagh in the late 18th or early 19th centuries. Or if you can refer me to anyone who might be able to give me information on him.
