I am reading Alan Clark's Last Diaries.
It is April, 1994. The Hon Alan Clark is staying at his Albany apartment in central London. He walks in to Wilton's restaurant in Jermyn Street, St James's, and encounters Frank Johnson.
They have lunch and in walks (Michael) Heseltine with a "PA who was all over him". Heseltine wore "a brand new dark grey suit, white silk shirt, coiffed hair ... loathsome".
Classic Clark. Brilliant.
Poor Tarzan suffered the ignominy of the self-made millionaire of having to buy his own furniture; poor elfin Alan the ignominy of having to sit in it.
ReplyDeleteWas at school with his daughter. My best man's parents used to have him to lunch quite regularly and he was always late. In the end they used to invite him for 12.30 instead of 1.00 so that he would turn up on time.
