The Regal Goring

I am not at all surprised that the Middleton family has selected the Goring Hotel in Beeston Place, SW1, as their accommodation prior to their daughter's transformation from Miss Middleton to Her Royal Highness Princess William of Wales (or a royal Duchess) on the 29th April.

The Daily Telegraph has a good little video of the hotel here.

The Goring Hotel was opened by Otto Richard Goring on March 2, 1910 and professed to be the first hotel in the world in which every room had a private bathroom and central heating. I'd consider it to be a "family-run" hotel, insofar as it is not part of a "chain".

The Goring Hotel, eminently traditional and sophisticated, is located neatly between Buckingham Palace and Victoria railway station. It is stated to be the Queen's favourite hotel in London.

  1. I can't imagine any occasion where Her Majesty would require the services of a hotel in London? Surely she is well catered for (pardon the pun) in that department.

  2. Seemingly it was the Queen Mother's favoured hotel, too.

I imagine it is preferred for a variety of factors - family-run; opulent; discreet; exceedingly high standards etc.

Agreed, though. Royalty have their own residences in the metropolis. Perhaps it is preferred by the Royal Household for private entertaining, catering ...

  4. I can't help thinking the royal family ought to have let them stay in Kensington Palace, or some such place - isn't a hotel (albeit a nice one) a bit lowly?

Personally, I'd have liked to have seen Miss Middleton ennobled in her own right the evening prior to the wedding (a Countess perhaps), or at least issued with letters patent giving her the style of the daughter of a Marquess or Duke; this would add a degree of equality to the whole thing!

  6. Perhaps Kate Middleton's father could be made a Duke or Marquess? It would all add to the pageantry. VC

  7. To be honest, I would have no objections to such a course of action - although I'm sure most of the public would be opposed (God knows why they'd care).

  9. Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall is the Princess of Wales.

Miss Middleton would eventually become HM The Queen Consort (Queen Catherine).

  10. Hi Tim,

I wouldn't mind a stay at the Goring. I imagine this hotel is in more lavish than the royal residences - I'm no expert but isn't the Queen known to be thrifty when it comes to decor? Would all royal bedrooms be ensuite, for example? I imagine they wouldn't be, since bathrooms were not thought of when the royal homes were built, and to start knocking down walls at this stage would not be allowed under conservation rules etc.

  11. Anon, she will certainly be a princess following her marriage - I was referring to her approach to the altar with a sense of parity.
