The Derrymore Acquisition
SELECTIVE ACQUISITIONS IN NORTHERN IRELAND
PROPERTY: Derrymore House, Bessbrook, County Armagh
John Grubb Richardson, a linen manufacturer, bought Derrymore house in 1859. He established the model village of Bessbrook and built Bessbrook Friends' Meeting House. The Richardsons had added a large Georgian style section to the cottage orné, which the National Trust demolished in order to return it to Isaac Corry's original design. The Act of Union was drafted in the drawing room of the house in 1880.
