St Hubert's, near Derrylin, County Fermanagh |
The demesne was located almost directly to the west of Inish Rath Island.
St Hubert's was demolished after the War.
To his credit J A K Dean has written about the former Victorian mansion in his Plight of the Big House in Northern Ireland, page 108.
Akin to Crom and Castle Saunderson, St Hubert's was castellated, with lofty chimneys and a tower.
The Saundersons sold St Hubert's to the Very Rev John Maunsell Massy-Beresford about 1870; and the mansion was in use until the 2nd World War.

My grandfather, Geoffrey Corbett (Shropshire Corbetts) came to Northern Ireland with his new bride in 1914 to be the Land Agent at Crom Castle. He was not very taken with the Land Agent's House and he then bought Rossferry, just beside Geaglum Pier. He served with the Coldstream Guards during WW1 and was awarded the DSO (unusual for a subaltern - I have the citation). At some stage - 1920's ? - he then bought the neighbouring St Huberts - not sure whether house and land or just land.
ReplyDeleteI was born at Rossferry in 1944 and christened in Crom Church, now living in Killinchy, Co Down. My grandparents returned to England on his retirement in the early 1950s.
