What do all these deputy lieutenants actually do?

They represent the Lord-Lieutenant in his (or her) absence. This would include local ceremonies and official events.

DLs must live within the county, or within seven miles of the boundary. Their appointment does not terminate with the changing of the Lord-Lieutenant. They usually retire at age 75.

So many of these names are familiar to me...but some seem to have acquired titles in the past 25 years or so!!
