Strangford Cormorants

Timothy Belmont has had a field day on several islands of Strangford Lough. I will write a full article tomorrow; though in the interim I have pleasure in posting one picture of cormorant chicks on Bird Island (west of Kirkubbin).

We counted 437 cormorant nests on the island.

Are you allowed on Bird Island whilst they are breeding? I thought everyone was banned.

A good point.

The warden explained to me that the National Trust conducts the nest-counting programme on behalf of government authorities, even on private islands.

EU Directives permit this for statistics on bird population numbers etc.

So yes, the general public is indeed banned.
