Doctor Carol

That cerebral doctor, Carol Vorderman MBE, spotted me as I passed her outside the Wolseley in Piccadilly (or vice versa!). She was on her mobile telephone. I asked her if she'd be kind enough to calculate the cost per millilitre of champers in the aforementioned cafe. No, I didn't actually!

I chuckled as I perused Fortnum's Fountain menu outside Jermyn Street, the cost of a full, cooked breakfast being the princely sum of twenty pounds.

I was so busy gabbing that I missed the turn off for the RVH one day and had to get off the M1 at the next exit. Came doon the Falls Road. There is a place you can get a 5 piece breakfast and a MUG of tea for £1.50. The much reviled but released Torrens Knight is a mate but he as tight as a ducks ass when it comes to takeout food. I guess you would be if you were detained at HM pleasure for a few years. He has a heart of corn though. I keep winding him up by telling him about that cheap place to eat out. Never bats an eyelid.

As an old schoolmaster used to say, "read, learned and inwardly digested". :-)

If you've never been, have a drink in the Cheshire Cheese (Fleet Street) or the Mitre (off Hatton Gardens) - both are steeped in history.
Fortnam's is a great place to eat but for very basic bargain British food, seek out a Stockpot cafe.
The coffee shop at Fulham Palace is a good place to enjoy low-cost luxury.

Clearly I don't get out enough. Met Seamus Heaney in Dublin once and he is such a gentleman. Passed Hugh Laurie on Grafton Street. If I had known then that he would go to the US of A and become Doctor House I would have latched onto his leg.
